Plowgirl Farm House Series #5

Problems

A month after we moved in, our oldest daughter began feeling sick. She had headaches and felt nauseous, and constantly had cold symptoms. I would tell her to take a bath and she would promptly throw up. One morning she passed out while I was braiding her hair. Through a great doctor’s help, we found out that there was mold in our house.

As soon as we found out we had mold, and before the mold specialist came to pinpoint where it was, I ran into the girl’s bathroom and tore off the wallpaper. I remembered that when we had looked at the house, there was a crack between the tub and the wall that was not filled with caulk. I also thought the bathroom smelled moldy. I had been intent on saving the cool old wallpaper but as soon as I knew it was making our daughter sick it became public enemy number one. I stopped what I was doing, walked into the bathroom and I ripped the wallpaper off. The walls behind the shower were covered in black mold. I closed the door and walked away.

After I tore of the wall paper in girls bathroom.

I am stubborn when I want to be and the idea of paying a mold remediation guy thousands of dollars just because he has a “remediator” behind his name bugged me. I refused to do it. My cousin, who was the girl’s doctor at the time said, “Wouldn’t it be nice to just know what kind of mold you are dealing with and where it is?” She was correct, I called the mold guy a friend recommended. What a great choice! This dude was so knowledgeable and while not cheap, he didn’t seem like he was trying to rip us off. He came in and did a thorough exam of the house and told us we should test the areas of suspicion. He set up air tests to determine where the mold was in our house. The crazy thing is the molds he found were the exact molds we had found in our daughter’s urine test. Now we knew what we were dealing with.

Four major problem spots were discovered. First the girl’s bathroom. Second the guest bathroom. Third the stairwell to the basement. Fourth the built-in cupboards in the basement.

Sunsets are a gift.
